Ziggy’s Story: A Sudden Emergency, a Devoted Companion, and a Plea for Help
For Melanie Taylor, Ziggy is family. The merle French Bulldog is her beloved companion and emotional support animal, bringing comfort and connection to her daily life.
Melanie, 61, lives alone on a fixed disability income. She and Ziggy share a close bond, and when he suddenly needed emergency care, she acted quickly to help him.
A Saturday Night That Changed Everything
On a Saturday night, Ziggy suddenly lost the use of his back legs. Melanie rushed him to an emergency veterinary hospital, where he was evaluated for a serious spinal problem, with intervertebral disc disease, or IVDD, suspected.
On Sunday, Ziggy was transferred to a neurologist for an MRI and further evaluation. The specialist was encouraged that surgery could help him. Melanie approved the procedure, and Ziggy went straight into spinal surgery.
With the emergency unfolding over a weekend, Melanie says she had no opportunity to arrange charitable assistance before treatment. She covered the costs across available credit accounts, taking on more than $12,000 in unexpected medical bills.
Caring for Ziggy at Home
After surgery, Ziggy needed intensive care at home. His first week was especially difficult, and Melanie was awake with him much of the day and night, helping him settle and managing his needs.
Her days became filled with medication schedules, meals, assisted potty breaks, and quiet time beside him to keep him calm during confinement.
To support his recovery, she also purchased essential supplies, including a secure recovery pen, an orthopedic bed, a sling or harness, and a transportation crate. Safely lifting Ziggy was physically demanding, so she bought a supportive brace for her own back.
Physical therapy expenses are still ahead.
Reaching Out for Help
As Melanie worked to manage Ziggy’s care, a friend helped her learn how to seek financial assistance for the emergency expenses she had already incurred.
Living on a fixed income, she has no easy way to absorb the medical debt alongside the ongoing costs of recovery. She is seeking grants and hardship assistance to help relieve that burden.
“I am doing everything within my power to care for my dog that I love & adore & that supports me every single day,” Melanie wrote.

Ziggy is recovering, and Melanie remains devoted to his daily care. His long-term outcome is not yet described, but her commitment to helping him through the days ahead is clear.
Financial support would help with the emergency bills and continuing recovery costs, giving Melanie more room to focus on the companion who means so much to her.
