Every night, Dutchess sleeps tucked into her mom’s arms—and stays there until morning. The four-year-old miniature dachshund is deeply loved, a constant companion whose favorite place is close to her family.

Then one attempt to join her mom on the couch changed everything.

Although her family had ramps in place, Dutchess tried to jump up and fell. She let out a loud yelp, then dragged her back paws as she whimpered. She also lost control of her bladder and bowels. Her mom rushed her to the local veterinarian.

After a thorough examination, the vet recommended an MRI and believed surgery would likely be needed for suspected intervertebral disc disease, or IVDD. The alternative offered was 30 days of strict crate rest with three medications, though the vet was not optimistic about her recovery with rest alone. According to her family, euthanasia was also raised.

Dutchess had turned four just two days earlier.

For her family, the fear of losing her was compounded by a devastating financial reality. Her mom receives disability benefits, and her dad receives Supplemental Security Income. An MRI and possible surgery are beyond what they can afford.

“I have been crying since 4 p.m.,” her mom wrote. “She sleeps in my arms every night.”

Her family’s plea is simple: they want a chance to help Dutchess. They are searching for funding and a path forward for a young dog who, until this injury, was happy and full of life.
